Building a competitive deck for less
- Buy the cheapest legal rarity. A Rare from a reprint set plays exactly the same as the Secret Rare.
- Buy the whole list from one seller. Postage once. Trade shops on Packrat list dozens of staples at a time, and offers on a stack are usually accepted.
- Watch the banlist. A card limited or banned in the next list drops immediately. Check the date of the next update before buying a full playset of a meta card.
- Structure decks first. Many archetypes get a structure deck that includes several of the expensive cards; three structure decks is often cheaper than the singles.
Collecting: Quarter Century, Collector's Rare and old Ultimates
Collector rarities price on condition and on the exact print. Two things to check on every listing: the set code (a Quarter Century Secret from an anniversary set and one from a later reprint are different cards to collectors) and clear photos of the foil surface, where scratches show. On Packrat, listings at £50 or more carry a timestamp photo of the actual card, and graded cards carry the grading company, grade and cert number.

Rarity. A card can exist as Common, Rare, Super Rare, Ultra Rare, Secret Rare, Ultimate Rare, Quarter Century Secret Rare, Collector's Rare and more, often across several reprints. The cheapest playable rarity is what deck builders buy; the Quarter Century and Collector's versions are what collectors pay for. Always check which rarity a listing is.
For a deck, always. Modern core sets put the deck-defining cards at Secret Rare, and a box does not guarantee any specific one. Buying the exact cards at the cheapest rarity is a fraction of the cost. Boxes are for opening, or for sets like Rarity Collection where the whole box is chase cards.
Check the holographic square in the bottom right, the card back colour, the font and the edges. Fakes are most common on expensive Secret Rares and old Ultimate Rares. Buy from rated sellers with photos of the actual card; Packrat listings over £50 carry a timestamp photo and every purchase is protected by escrow.
No. Yu-Gi-Oh! keeps the TCG (English and other European languages) and OCG (Japanese, Korean) separate, and OCG cards are not legal in TCG events. OCG singles can be much cheaper and are fine for a collection, but buy TCG printings for tournaments.
